Australian  Coin  Collection

Pre - Decimal

Before 1900 Australia was a British Colony and used English coinage as legal tender.

Australia changed to decimal currency in 1966, before this time we used the English monetary system of Pounds, Shillings and Pence.

Mint marks for both systems are many, and variations are common in all types of Australian Coins, for more information on varieties click on the link at the bottom of this page.

Listed below is a guide to the Mint Marks used on Australian Coins.

Pre Decimal.

Copper Coins:

(Y.) (A.) Dot after A or Y = Perth Mint.

(H) below scroll = Heaton Mint, England.

(.B) Dot below scroll = Melbourne Mint.

(.A) Dot above scroll = Sydney Mint.

(I) below Monarch= Bombay Mint India.

(I) Below scroll= Calcutta Mint India.

(PL) After Y = Royal Mint London.

Dot between K&G on reverse = Perth Mint.

Silver Coins:

(M) Under date = Melbourne Mint.

I will place the relevant mint mark in brackets after the date in the list of coins in this collection.

All decimal coins for circulation  are produced at the Royal Australian Mint Canberra.

Commemorative issues, Special coins of  Silver and Gold are produced at other mints and carry the mint mark for that mint:

Decimal  Coinage:

The coin quantities listed in this section are representative of that coin only in that I have more than 1 of each of them in most cases.

*Mint Marks do exist in the Decimal coins of the first 2 or 3 years of issue, but they consist of small alterations to the pictures of the animals on the reverse side of the coin and are hard to detect as years of use detracts from the mint lustre of the coin.*
